A parts-catalog illustration helps locate a component, but the drawing alone does not tell you which application row to use.

Read across the row.

The supplied 2001 catalog lays out item, part number, quantity, line, series, body, engine, transmission, trim and description columns. Start with the illustration item, then read every qualifier on its row.

Use the legend on the page.

The XJ legend distinguishes left- and right-hand-drive lines, two- and four-wheel drive, body style, engine and transmission identifiers. For example, its J line is left-hand drive with four-wheel drive, while T is left-hand drive with two-wheel drive. The same legend labels DGS as the four-speed Aisin automatic transmission.

Match the actual component.

Record the complete number on the part label. Keep suffixes, connector photographs and configuration notes with the record. Do not treat a neighboring row, similar drawing or shared model name as proof of interchange.
